There is no "Best Time". There is a right time. I had to put down my first "full lifetime" dog and it was the second hardest thing I ever had to do. It was the right thing to do. He had a cancerous growth in his nose and could not breath. He was only staying alive for me as that was his job in life to make me happy, and he did his job very well.
What it comes down to is, the time to put your dog to sleep is when it is in his best interest. It is the most selfless act you can do. It would be selfish to try to keep him/her alive just because you don't want to see them die. You never want them to die! But you also don't want them to be in pain and suffer. I had to make this decission 3 days before Christmas 2008. I held him until pain was gone.
I know I will see my dog again when I cross over "Rainbow Bridge". (http://www.petloss.com/poems/maingrp/rainbowb.htm) -it will make you cry!!!
If you have ever lost a pet, It Will Make Sense!
