Sometimes a kid will take something from a store without your knowledge, you know like candy, gum, etc. How would you go about making sure they do not continue to shoplift?
Depending on their age and level of understanding, I will bring him/her back to the store and make him/her return the stolen item. If the child is old enough to know about consequences, to know right from wrong and a request from you is not sufficient perhaps embarrassing them will.
It worked for me. When I was 8 I took a pack of gum from a supermarket and my parents made me go back and return it. -- Never again!
If I realized in time, I would take the child to the store, and I think I would call ahead to let them know I was coming and be very stern with my child.
I would take them back to the store, allow them to return it, apologize profusely and then get one of those kid leashes. Embarrassment is the easiest way to prove a point.
