I disagree that most women are avoiding it. Some women can't do it, it can be very painful, and sometimes the babies just don't "get it" and are eating enough. Sometimes women just don't WANT to do it, for these or other reasons. Babies also wake up more often for feedings when you breastfeed (it's not as filling). Formula fills them up a bit more, and makes them less apt to wake up and want an exhausted mommy's boobie. This can be bad when they're newborns and need to feed every 2-4 hours, but wonderful is an older infant decides to slepp through the night! Formulas these days are so nutrient rich and similar to breastmilk it doesn't make a difference. Plus, if the new mom eats like crap, the baby eats like crap.
I didn't breastfeed, and I got hell for it from what I called "Milk Nazis" who think you're an awful mother if you don't breastfeed. It's not the only way to bond with your baby, and you're not a terrible person if you choose not to do it, but make sure you get a reputable brand of formula and
