My son writes and produces his own music. How could he go about getting someone important in the music industry to listen to him?

With all the internet exposure out there, you should be able to find someone who may know someone. I would be very careful that someone does not steal any of his music.

The internet's probably the best place to start, Set up some profiles on well known sites and maybe place a couple ads on sites and try to get whatever fans he gets on those sites to spread the word about his music. It's not a sure thing by any means, But if he's able to gain a nice amount of fans and word of his music gets around then some record label would probably show some interest.

The internet! Post the song on youtube!! maybe on myspace because people have gotten famous just by putting their music on myspace! Also try to find the email addresses of some famous music record companies, That would help. :) there are many ways to get our music recognized.
